EcoVibe – Style Defined By Consciousness

BY MICHAEL CAVAZOS

Fashion is innately political. It is an art form that speaks volumes about the designers and the wearers. Not only does this medium speak of aesthetics, it also sends out various messages that might include one’s political ideologies, gender identity, sexuality, religious affiliation, class, interests and passions. To don an article of clothing is to make a choice about how you are to be perceived by the public. Where you choose to shop, therefore, also is a political act. Being knowledgeable about where your clothing comes from and how they are made will make you a wiser consumer. We are fortunate to have so many social advocates in Portland that make the job of finding smartly designed clothing that speaks to a consciousness that is important to so many of us.

Enter EcoVibe Apparel, a boutique located in the Pearl District. It’s brand of style offers a simple elegance, a relaxed “vibe,” intelligent social regard and heart that could save the world.

Opened in 2010 by husband and wife team, Andrea and Leonard Allen, EcoVibe Apparel is on a mission to “provide clothing and accessories for individuals who are seeking items that embody style, functionality, and sustainability.” Consciously choosing to be socially and environmentally responsible, they carry garments that are manufactured in sweatshop free shops with fair labor practices. The lines they carry also use “environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, support organic agriculture, and help build communities through locally owned small business and socially responsible activities.” Girl, you ain’t got to worry about buyer’s remorse here; instead, you can delight in your purchase and wear your new fashions with confidence.

When you enter EcoVibe, you do get a real sense of calm. It’s cool green walls and artwork by Fauna Rose Taylor offer serene surroundings for their manicured boutique. Leonard greeted me upon my last visit and had so much knowledge to share about their goods. With a warm smile and firm handshake, he gave me a tour through their space, offering insight about each product. With a range of garments to outfit you from head to toe, you will find amazing buys and a wonderful women’s selection. The menswear here is much slimmer, but definitely offers some great style. Here are some of my favorites at EcoVibe:

Lace Camisoles by M. Rena at EcoVibe Apparel

One of their biggest sellers is a lace camisole by M. Rena. They have a selection of 20 colors in-house! This item is no ordinary camisole. It offers a lot of support to flatter your figure. You can wear it as a tank top alone, use it to layer under a blazer or top, or sneak it under a dress for a spanx-like effect. Get this in your favorite colors and in several neutrals to build up that wardrobe!

Clary Sage Organics Convertible Wrap at EcoVibe Apparel

I love this convertible wrap by Clary Sage Organics. You can wear it in multiple ways! Who doesn’t need versatility like this? Wear it open and long or wrap it to show off your curves. It’s made of bamboo and organic cotton and feels oh so cozy!

Faux Fur Vest by The Battalion at EcoVibe Apparel

Add a bit of whimsy to your Fall wardrobe with this faux fur vest made by The Battalion. It’s fun, lightweight and totally will bring out your inner sex kitten. Here kitty-kitty… no animals were harmed in the making of this sassy number.

Jacket by Juleselin Organics at EcoVibe Apparel

Cowl Top by Juleselin Organics at EcoVibe Apparel

Offering a collection made from organic cotton and recycled fabrications, Juleselin Organics‘ products are comfortable and beautifully designed. You can’t leave EcoVibe without trying something on by them. Check out this very cool jacket in bright orange and their cowl top with a fun deconstructed piping look along the neckline.

CorkStyle Imports Handbag at EcoVibe Apparel

If you’re looking to make a statement, get this handbag made by CorkStyle Imports. The fabric used on this bag is made from the bark of oak trees. It’s quirky, corky fun!

Pure Vegan Shoe by Olsen Haus at EcoVibe Apparel

Vegan shoes no longer are limited to bland and forgetful styles. EcoVibe carries a nice assortment made by Olsen Haus. This heel is flirty, sexy and offers fun snakeskin-like texture for some extra va-va-va-voom! Vegan, yes. Boring, no!

Bracelets by Kevia at EcoVibe Apparel

Earrings by Amy Burgess Jewelry at EcoVibe Apparel

Finally, for jewelry, try on some Portland-based designs. I loved the gorgeous bracelets by Kevia as well as the selection of rings, necklaces and earrings they offer. Another local company, Amy Burgess Jewelry, had some wonderful earrings made from scrap metal, pretty gemstones and recycled silver.

You can’t go wrong with this boutique. You’ll feel wonderful in their clothing and proud to be such a forward thinking consumer with style. EcoVibe is located at 921 NW Everett Street. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm and on Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
