Alley 33 Fashion Event A Success!- RECAP

BY MICHAEL CAVAZOS

It’s as if the planets aligned perfectly for the first annual Alley 33 fashion show this past Saturday, July 23rd. The sun shined brightly, the crowd cheered and the show went off without a hitch. Mag-Big, Siren Nation, and Breedom Public Sewing House’s presentation of 19 designers, 58 looks, and tons of style ruled the early evening outdoor event. They managed to turn a very urban public space (the 33rd Avenue alley at Hawthorne Boulevard) into a very Portland runway.

Their program stated, “This fashion show is about sustainability through local production. It is no secret that Portland has amazing apparel designers, but it is still an on-going effort to bring small production to the foreground as a palpable and qualified source for high fashion.” To make their vision come to life and bring small production forward, they curated local designers with a wide array of collections from casual wear to swimwear and lingerie, from eyewear to vintage inspired looks. There was such a broad mix that everyone was sure to find something they loved.

We enjoyed all the styles shown, especially those by Radish Underground Apparel who showed fun prints on casual, very wearable looks; She-She Designs that had bold color on really structured dresses; and Moonwoods Eyewear with their collection of very chic wooden frames. We loved the vintage-inspired pieces by Jitterbuggin’ Clothing Company. We applaud their complete styled looks; from head to toe, their models seemed to come to life right out of a reel of an old Hollywood film. And finally, the show closed with the inspired looks by Amai Unmei, who gave us structured, stylish, classic silhouettes and color bright enough to make any rainy Portland day much brighter.

We were thrilled to be in the crowd on this first venture by the presenters. We look forward to seeing how this event grows and changes in the coming years.
